Half of a Yellow Sun (2022)
Redesign of ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’, a novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (2006). This book is hand-bound.

A unique, non-Western view of a torn African country, abandoned by the world. Get confronted with the Biafran war through the eyes of Ugwu, Odenigbo, Olanna and Richard. Their worlds come together in Nigeria, in the ‘60s.

The novel tells the story of the Biafran War (1967-1970). This was a civil war fought between the government of Nigeria and the Republic of Biafra. For the design of this book, I wanted to subtly use all of the four colors from the flag of Biafra.

The story shifts its focus on main characters multiple times. While reading the book, I noticed it is sometimes not that clear about which character the chapter is about. That is why the chapter titles are a bit expanded, to give a bit more of a context to the story you are reading. In the original book, big leaps in the story are indicated with just a few dots. To make these changes more prominent, I made a whole page to give the reader ‘a break’.
